How to Run Faster – Without Being Chased

You’ve heard the joke, about two hikers in the woods who encounter a bear. One turns around to start running away from it and his friend yells at him, “What are you doing? You can’t out run a bear?”. The runner turns around and replies back, “I know I can’t run faster than the bear – I just have to run faster than YOU!”.

It’s a tale of speed, and the faster one always wins, or in this case doesn’t get eaten.

So, what if you are a runner and are looking to get faster. What do you do? There is a lot of conflicting advice out there, so let me uncomplicate the issue for you.

First off, to run faster you must, well, run faster. Do not log in the miles, just for the sake of getting a certain weekly mileage in. I call these junk miles, and they won’t help you to get faster. Instead, you need short bursts of quick speed, accompanied by periods of active rest, for a set number of reps. We call these intervals in the industry, and they are the tried and true method of improving any run time – from a 10km to a marathon.
